PRECEPTORSHIP: Midwife Training, Apprenticeships
What is included in scholarship: Students are required to attend clinic Wednesday from 9-2 and Thursday from 2-7 (with the exception of postpartum visits). I am a NARM certified preceptor for PEP and MCU students. Students must have reliable transportation AND childcare. Experience is irrelevant as students will be trained weekly regardless. Students will learn; appropriate charting, prenatal and postpartum care, natural family planning, assessment of the newborn and newborn exams, well woman care, laboratory interpretation, radiology interpretation, medication administration, phlebotomy, IV'S, billing, filing state forms, triage, hearing assessments, and much more. Midwifery is significantly different from doula work and is considered a lifestyle not an apprenticeship. Therefore, students (and midwives) go on call at 37 weeks until delivery. Postpartum visits are done in the home at 24 and 48 hours and again at 7 days; if there are not postpartum and breastfeeding issues. In the event of postpartum complications, we are in the home PRN daily. Families are then seen in clinic at 2, 4, and 6 weeks for standard postpartum care. There is no fee associated for “ANY” clinical training, housing and travel are not included. There is a student contract which lays out expectations for complete transparency. Short term placement of 6 months with preference of long term placement of 1-2 years.
THIS IS A PRECEPTORSHIP !!  THIS IS A BIRTH CENTER AND A HOME BIRTH MIDWIFERY PRACTICE
Additional comments: Midwifery books are available for use while students are apprenticing. The books are property of AMC, however, students may check them out during their apprenticeship
How does your PRACTICE define a qualified recipient for your scholarship? : Students applying for scholarship must provide proof of current NRP/CPR certification. Students should be doula trained but certification is not required. Students are required to have a minimum of at least 3 out-of-hospital births. Additionally, all students must have reliable transportation and childcare.

How does your practice define a qualified recipient for a preceptorship?: Qualified recipients are currently enrolled in a MEAC-accredited program.  Because my practice is relatively small (I attend about 2 births/month), this site might be best for a student at the beginning of her training, although I am happy to take a more advanced student who is not anxious about "getting her numbers."  Advanced students who serve as birth assistants get compensated @ $250/birth.
